Campus Compact has partnered with the Community-Based Global Learning Collaborative to arrange a national discussion on the Ukraine crisis. The conversation will include Diya Abdo, Professor of English at Guilford College and Founder of Every Campus a Refuge; Eric Hartman, Executive Director of the Haverford College Center for Peace and Global Citizenship and co-founder of the Collaborative; and Shelley Inglis, Executive Director of the University of Dayton Human Rights Center and an accomplished practitioner of human rights law, working with the United Nations in the Balkans, Turkey, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Together, they will provide critical information on how campuses can respond currently and proactively to support the global human rights movement and the immediate crisis, and help us envision and compile ways that institutions and individuals can offer support immediately and over the longer term. In this webinar, we discuss the ways Brandeis University has historically defined and rewarded service and how such policies are shifting to increase the accessibility of community engagement experiences for all students. Applying Deliberative Polling: A Course for Students to Study and Enact Deliberative Democracy

This webinar will discuss how higher education institutions can build virtual and in-person deliberative democracy into student life. It will focus on COMM 138/238 Applying Deliberative Polling, a practicum course for students at Stanford. In COMM 138/238, students study deliberative democracy and then design and implement their own Deliberative Poll, an experiment and educational event where participants are surveyed about their opinions on policy after moderated, small-group deliberation.

Pathways of Public Service and Civic Engagement

Campus Compact and the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University have announced a new partnership to expand the reach of the Pathways of Public Service and Civic Engagement and support its associated Working Group. This academic year, the entities will co-facilitate and support the Working Group, a collaborative effort undertaken by 88 institutions and organizations across the U.S. and abroad to implement, analyze, use, and refine the Pathways framework and survey. Beginning in the 2023–2024 academic year, Campus Compact will assume fiscal and programmatic management and work in partnership with Working Group members to identify rotating leadership co-chairs. Furthermore, Campus Compact is now using the Pathways as a centerpiece of the Newman Civic Fellowship experience and curriculum design. Engaging Community Partners as Co-Educators, Comrades, and Co-Conspirators

It is a commonly accepted statement in the community engagement field that community partners function as co-educators of students. However, this construct of co-educator is much harder to put into practice when one is actually creating and implementing a course. Hear from pairs of faculty and community partners about how their co-educator partnerships work “in practice,” and get their candid insights about the opportunities and challenges inherent in this kind of relationship. Participants will also explore how partnerships can situate faculty and community partners as comrades and co-conspirators in transforming higher education and community spaces to be more just and equitable.
