Inclusive Excellence Toolkit

A Guide for Higher Education from CCNH

This toolkit assembles resources from a statewide symposium, Project Inclusion New Hampshire: Assessing and Enacting a Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity on Campus. The symposium, held in June 2016, explored strategies for making higher education more inclusive in ways that benefit all members of the campus community. Project Inclusion was made possible through the support from the Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation, Bank of America, N. A., Trustee.  Documentation of the materials found on this page was made possible through the generous support of the New Hampshire Endowment for Health. Sponsored jointly by Campus Compact for New Hampshire (CCNH) and the New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE), the symposium gathered higher education leaders from across New England to discuss strategies and models for preparing students to succeed in our increasingly multicultural society. The resources here offer hands-on guidance for campuses in New Hampshire and beyond that are seeking to put higher education access and success within reach for all students. You’ll find groundbreaking tools, including:

•  NERCHE’s Self-Assessment Rubric for the Institutionalization of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Higher Education.

•  A companion worksheet for the Self-Assessment Rubric designed to help campuses select and use the indicators most appropriate for their institutional status.

•  A keynote presentation that describes tools for cultivating and assessing inclusive campus environments.

•  Models from four New Hampshire campuses, representing a range of institutional types, that are piloting an innovative new program.

•  Videos of the project introduction and keynote presentations, with essential background information, powerful anecdotes, and campus tools.

PREPARING NEW HAMPSHIRE’S STUDENTS FOR GLOBAL SUCCESS

The Inclusive Excellence Initiative

In 2011, a coalition of higher education leaders launched a bold initiative aimed at ensuring that New Hampshire’s students graduate from college prepared for participation in an increasingly multicultural democracy. The goal of the initiative, called Enhancing Inclusive Excellence in New Hampshire Communities, was to create resources and models for “inclusive excellence”—that is, preparing all students to live and work in a multicultural, multilingual, and multiracial society. Spearheaded by CCNH and the New Hampshire College & University Council (NHCUC) in conjunction with the University of New Hampshire, the initiative has built strong relationships between higher education and diverse communities both on and off campus. These groups have forged ties with a broad coalition of supporters, including the New Hampshire Inclusive Excellence Advisory Board, consisting of education, business, and community leaders from across the state.

Project Inclusion

In partnership with CCNH, the New Hampshire Inclusive Excellence Advisory Board, and UMass Boston, NERCHE’s Project Inclusion is extending this work by piloting a statewide effort to assess institutional structures, policies, and practices around diversity, equity, and inclusiveness in New Hampshire’s colleges and universities. Following a symposium in 2015, four campuses were chosen as Project Inclusion pilot sites:

Antioch University New England Keene State College Rivier University University of New Hampshire

These institutions, all members of CCNH, were chosen on the basis of their current cultural engagement efforts and their readiness to undergo broad-based, structural change in order to sustain and expand those efforts. Representatives of each of these four institutions presented models at the 2016 symposium; their presentations are included here.
